Vice President Joe Biden's son, Beau Biden, was admitted to a hospital in Maryland on Tuesday.

White House officials have not specified why Biden was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center or what he is being treated for, but CNN reports that the situation is "serious." The vice president's son is 46 years old and a father of two with his wife, Hallie.

For eight years Beau Biden served as the attorney general of Delaware. Biden currently works with investor law firm Grant & Eisenhofer representing whsitleblowers, according to CNN. He also served a one-year tour in Iraq as a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard and was a prosecutor with the U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia from 1997 to 2002. 

Beau Biden has had a few health issues in the past.

In 2010, he suffered a mild stroke. Biden's motor/speech skills were not altered by the stroke, but three years later he had another scare. The vice president's son was diagnosed with a brain lesion after felling "disoriented and weak" during a family vacation, according to CNN. Biden had surgery to remove the lesion at a hospital in Texas that specializes cancer treatment.
