Britain's Prince Harry has called for the reestablishment of mandatory military service in the United Kingdom, according to a report by CNN,

The 30-year-old heir to the throne has praised the armed forces for the "amazing things" the army has done for him in his 10 years of service with them.

"Bring back national service," Prince Harry said, according to the Sunday Times.

"I dread to think where I'd be without the army. You can make bad choices in life, some severe, but it's how you recover from those and which path you end up taking."

Prince Harry is set to leave the army in June, reports ABC. Earlier this year, he announced that he would quit his army job to attend to more Royal duties. He has recently finished his training in Australia and is now on tour in New Zealand.

In the report by US Weekly, the prince, who is fifth in line to the throne, said he would encourage his nephew and niece to engage in military service.

"I would definitely encourage George – and Charlotte if she wants to – to have some sort of involvement in the Armed Forces – guaranteed," Harry said. "And I know that William and Catherine would probably echo that as well, depending on the situation for them in those years to come.

"It's done no harm, just good, for me, and I know it's the same for William."

During World War II, military conscription was compulsory in UK and had continued until its abolition in 1960.

According to data made available by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, 72 countries across the globe still maintain mandatory military service.
