"Sleepy Hollow" received a generous renewal from Fox earlier this year, but the sci-fi series will lose one of its fan-favorite characters.

Orlando Jones, who plays Frank Irving, will not return for the upcoming third season, according to Variety. The show also will welcome a new showrunner, Clifton Campbell, to replace Mark Goffman.

At the end of season 2, the death of Henry Parrish (John Noble) released Frank's soul from evil and he reunited with Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie). Also in the finale, Crane had to make the tough decision to kill his wife, Katrina (Katia Winter), in the victor over evil.

The third season will explore how the partnership between Crane and Mills evolves and what challenges they will face next, according to Fox. "Sleepy Hollow" spans two and a half centuries as a resurrected Crane pairs up with a present-day police lieutenant Mills to save the town of Sleepy Hollow and the world from an apocalyptic event.

Fox has not announced whether the show will return in the fall or at midseason.
