Goku will pick up his quest to recover the coveted Dragon Balls almost 20 years after his last adventure.

Toei Animation announced on Tuesday that "Dragon Ball Super" has started production, according to Entertainment Weekly. The Japanese anime series will premiere this July in Japan, 18 years after the last "Dragon Ball" series concluded its run.

The "Dragon Ball" series is based on the manga series by Akira Toriyama, who will oversee production on "Super." The new series will chronicle Goku's battle with Majin Buu as he "attempts to maintain Earth's fragile peace" and will follow the events of the film "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'," which premieres this July.

The first "Dragon Ball" anime series ran for three years in the late 1980s. The next installment, "Dragon Ball Z," premiered soon after in 1989 and ran until 1996. "Dragon Ball GT" was not based on Toriyama's work, and the creator considered this series a "side story" to "Dragon Ball."'

An American premiere date has not been released.
