Sometimes, the stars just align to present unforeseen opportunities.

Director/writer Joss Whedon has helmed the last two "Avengers" films for Marvel and helped to develop the now insanely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. But after several years on the job, Whedon is leaving the Marvel family to focus on original projects.

Unless something else catches his eye, of course.

Warner Bros./DC is set to build on their shared movie universe with next year's "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Suicide Squad." After that, the studio has a handful of prime comic book material slated for the big screen. Could Whedon make the jump from marvel to its arch nemesis DC?

"I was a Marvel kid growing up, but I was always DC-curious. And I see myself on the spectrum in between," Whedon told IGN in a recent interview. "I desperately wanted to do a Batman film - who doesn't? And I wanted to do Wonder Woman."

Whedon actually tried to get a Wonder Woman project on the big screen in 2007 but it ultimately fell through. He saw it as a humorous ex-girlfriend situation.

"I don't care who she's seeing now. We don't talk much. And I wish her well," he said. "I worked really hard on that movie and it meant a lot, but I don't know if what I was trying to do would fit with what their vision is. I'm excited to see it so I just want them to make it so I can see it!"

Of course, that's similar to what J.J. Abrams said before officially signing on to direct "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" so never-say-never in the movie industry.

Perhaps Whedon would be interested in DC's rumored solo-Batman film that may be coming in 2019? However, Whedon's humor may not fit in with DC's supposed anti-joke position in their movies.

"Sure. I'd be like 'I have all these joke ideas.' And they'd be like 'No, we don't do that here,'" he said.
