Kentucky jurors convicted a woman on Thursday for fatally shooting her boyfriend the night he had a date scheduled with Miss Ohio.

Shayna Hubers, 24, claimed when she shot Ryan Poston six times in the face, back and torso on Oct. 12, 2012, that it was in self-defense because he was being abusive, according to the New York Daily News.

But prosecutors say Hubers killed 29-year-old Poston, her on and off-again boyfriend for a year, in a jealous rage because he wanted to break up with her. It took five hours for the jury to find her guilty of murder.

Prosecutors also said the defendant, who was 21 at the time, previously sent texts to a friend saying she was going to kill Poston at a shooting range and make it look like an accident, the newspaper reported.

The night before the murder, Poston and Hubers had dinner with his parents. During the meal Poston privately told his stepfather he had a date with Audrey Bolte, Miss Ohio 2012, the next night.

Poston then asked for advice on how to break up with his girlfriend, the Daily News reported.

Later that night, the couple argued. The following night they argued again. At that point, prosecutors say Hubers grabbed hold of her boyfriend's handgun and shot him six times.

The defendant placed a 911 call at around 9 p.m. saying her boyfriend had been physically abusive and that she shot him.

Bolte and Poston were supposed to meet for drinks later at 9:30 p.m. Bolte, who was second runner-up at the 2012 Miss USA pageant, testified at Hubers' trial that she was looking forward to the date.

After the shooting, an inmate who shared a jail cell with Hubers while she awaited trial testified she witnessed the young woman laugh "about shooting him in the face and giving him the nose job he always wanted,' the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

"That's what bothered me- she cackled," the inmate said.

Hubers is expected to be sentenced Friday.
