Spider-Man decided it's time to go back to his graphic roots, where he first gained his popularity.

Sony announced Wednesday that "The Lego Movie" producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce an animated film of the story. They are writing the script, but it's unclear if they will also stand in as directors.

"The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing," reads a Sony press release.

Rumors surfaced about the possibility of an animated Spider-Man film in the works during the Sony email hack, but the allegations weren't confirmed until this announcement.

Sony is producing the animated film, as it holds the film rights to the Spider-Man franchise. However, the company recently cut a deal with Marvel to share Spider-Man so he can make appearances in Marvel movies, such as "The Avengers."

The movie is expected to be released on July 20, 2018.
