The "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." spinoff series is taking shape with Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood at the center of it.

Palicki and Blood are finalizing deals to headline the new Marvel TV series on ABC, according to Deadline. Both actors joined "S.H.I.E.L.D." at the beginning of season two.

The spinoff will feature their characters Barbara "Bobbi" Morse a.k.a. Mockingbird (Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Blood). The former husband and wife have rekindled their romance this season, but are currently on the outs again as the season heads toward the finale.

ABC plans to launch the new show as soon as this fall, according to Entertainment Weekly. "S.H.I.E.L.D." executive producer Jeffrey Bell will develop the new series with "S.H.I.E.L.D." writer Paul Zbyszewski, who would likely serve as the showrunner if the network picks it up.

No upcoming episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will serve as a backdoor pilot for the new series, but future plot lines will "lay the groundwork" for the potential spinoff.

ABC has not given "S.H.I.E.L.D." an official season three renewal and the spinoff series will have to compete against the other pilots in contention for the 2015-2016 season. Marvel's other ABC series, "Agent Carter," which aired an 8-episode first season this winter, has only a slim chance at renewal.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
