Few if any saw Brooklyn (38-44) as a playoff contender, but the watered down Eastern Conference made it possible for the Nets to sneak into the postseason with the conference's eighth seed.  Although the Nets have a spot in the playoffs, their first-round matchup won't be easy.  They face the East's No. 1 seed, an Atlanta team that surprised many with its 60-22 season.

"They've played consistently well all year long," Brooklyn coach Lionel Hollins told the Associated Press. "It's a tremendous challenge, but that's what competition is all about."

The biggest question for the Hawks will be if rust plays a factor in Sunday's game.  Atlanta chose to give its key starters lots of rest down the stretch to make sure they were healthy and ready to go, resulting in the team losing eight of its last 15 games, including three straight to end the regular season.

Although the Hawks dominated the East for most of the season, the team's veteran players understand what happened in the regular season doesn't mean a thing when the postseason starts.

"We understand that seeds don't really matter once you get in the playoffs," Hawks center Al Horford said. "We were the perfect example of that last year. We pushed Indiana to the limit. We understand we need to come out with a sense of urgency."
