Florida police shot and killed a man Thursday evening after he reportedly attacked an officer with a samurai sword, authorities said.

The man had stopped using his medication and was acting violently, which led his mother to call the police for help, the New York Daily News reported.

When police arrived to the Navarre home, the man was holding a knife described as a samurai sword, and officers tried to subdue him with non-lethal force using a bean bag gun, but the man began swinging the large knife.

In the confrontation, Deputy Matthew Ray was cut and was severely injured. He was taken to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola where he had surgery, and as of this morning, is said to be "doing well," the Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook Friday morning. No other information about his condition has been released.

Another deputy then shot the assailant "several times" after Ray was sliced, Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Capt. Bob Johnson said. The man was killed on the scene, and his name wasn't immediately released.

As of 12:50 p.m. Friday, the suspect was identified as 22-year-old Gordon Talmage Kimbrell Jr. Before the incident occurred, witnesses stated that Kimbrell Jr. consumed half a bottle of rum, and when asked to stop drinking, he began throwing kitchen knives at his relatives, Pensacola News Journal reported.

When family members became frightened, they hid in a bedroom, and that's when Kimbrell Jr. allegedly began stabbing the door moments before authorities arrived. When police arrived, he  headed outside holding the sword.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation into the use of force, according to Pensacola News. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office will be conducting an administrative investigation as well.
