Barry Manilow secretly married his manager Garry Kief in a surprise wedding last year in efforts to keep his sexual orientation out of the public eye.

An inside source revealed to the National Enquirer that the ceremony was held inside the couple's multi-million dollar mansion last April.

"It was a total surprise. When they arrived they were told it was a wedding!" a source close to the "Copacabana" singer told the Enquirer. "Barry has lived a very secretive life and the wedding was no different! Barry and Garry did not tell friends or family that the occasion was their wedding. It was a beautiful wedding and consummated their lifelong love affair!"

The secret ceremony was attended by 50 close friends and family who the couple, who have been together for 30 years, could trust not to leak the story to the media. Manilow and Kief didn't even formally file the paperwork to have their union recognized right away in fears that the story would leak, the source told the magazine.

"Barry is paranoid that his fans would not approve of him being gay, when in reality, many have suspected it for years - and most wouldn't care," the source the Enquirer. "They would be happy for him!"

Marc Hulett, Barry's assistant since the 1980s, registered online to become a minister so he could perform the "commitment ceremony." Suzanne Somers, a long time friend of Barry's, reportedly stood as his best man.
