The new level of high definition TV, called 4k, is already supported by Blu-Ray, Youtube and many other companies, but Apple doesn't seem to have much interest in it.

Unnamed sources inside Apple told Buzzfeed News that the soon-to-be-announced Apple TV will not support 4K video. One source said that while '4K is great, but it's still in its infancy,'

This move is a bit disjointed, since A8 chips which Apple installed in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are 4K compatible. However, Buzzfeed News notes there's very little 4K content online outside of Amazon and Netflix, and even there, available options are fairly limited. There are also very few households that have a 4K television in their home.

While this may seem detrimental for 4K's future, it's worth noting most users didn't have access to high-definition devices or content for the first few years it was marketed. Over time and becuase the tech required to install high-definition screens and streaming devices became cheaper, high definition gained a firm foothold.

"No one wants to talk about it, but going from Netflix's average 3Mbps stream to their 4K stream at 16Mbps is very expensive.....4K is many, many years away from being adopted at critical mass," Frost & Sullivan principal analyst Dan Rayburn told BuzzFeed News.

Earlier reports revealed that Apple will announce the new Apple TV at the 2015 WWDC, which MacRumors predicts will occur some time between June 8 and June 12. Apple also plans to release a redesign of the Beats music streaming service there.
