Australia-based Woolworths has announced that it will launch a shopping app for the Apple Watch when the gadget becomes available to smartwatch fans.

The move will make the app, called "Woolies Shop," one of the first apps to be made available for the high-tech watch, which is scheduled to be released in late April, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Woolies Shop will help customers find the products they need while at the supermarket. Users will receive access to information about locations of different stores, walking and driving distances, and when stores open and close, ZDNet reported. The app also lets customers create and sort shopping lists by aisle order so they can easily navigate through the store.

Woolworths worked with Bilue and Neoteny on the shopping app, which has been in development since early December of 2014. Cameron Barrie, managing director at Bilue, said shoppers, even those who own a smartphone, will have a whole new experience looking for products when they use the Apple Watch.

"We think because we have our phones and it's always there in your pocket, you don't have to go over there to open up your laptop; but the watch takes that to a whole another level. I don't even have to get it out of my pocket, it's right on my wrist," Barrie said.

Woolworths said one of the main features, called "Glance," makes sure users get shopping information quickly, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. The company designed the app to work with the iPhone as well as on its own.

Woolies Shop, along with the Apple Watch, will be available to customers on April 24. Other apps launching on the smartwatch include Uber, eBay, Facebook Airtasker, Evernote, the Guardian, Twitter and Shazam.
