The iHeartRadio Music Awards brings the biggest names in music together -- through a variety of technology -- each year.

iHeartRadio has announced that more than 5.5 million people tuned in to see last year's inaugural show, and that number could skew higher this year.

Last year, Rihanna won the most awards with Artist of the Year, Hip-Hop/R and B Song of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Fan Army, a category that is selected by fan vote.

The broadcast represents a growing trend of convergence, bringing together audiences across several platforms including social media participants who can engage through Twitter, TV viewers and livestream-Internet viewers.

iHeartRadio said the 2014 show achieved 8.5 billion social impressions, and the #iHeartAwards subject category was the No. 1 trend on Twitter during the night of the event.

Technology continues to play a starring role in awards shows. In the case of the iHeartRadio Music Awards, fans have been able to vote online and through social media. The winners in the categories Best Fan Army, Best Lyrics and Renegade Award are determined by fans and are announced during the broadcast, the company said.

The event is held at The Shrine Auditorium and is hosted by Jamie Foxx. Performers listed were Pitbull, Pharrell Williams, Shakira, Ariana Grande, Arcade Fire and Ed Sheeran.

Rihanna returned to sing her newly released single, "B---- Better Have My Money."

Justin Timberlake, who has grown from key boy band figure to top solo artist, was honored with the 2015 iHeartRadio Innovator Award.

Other top performers on hand were Madonna, Meghan Trainor and Jason Aldean.

Of all the musicians, Iggy Azalea and Taylor Swift were the most-nominated artists, each up for five awards.
