The stage was set. Sports writers probably had a template set up for today’s news—“Mariano Gets Save in Final All-Star Game appearance.” However, that’s not exactly how it went, as American League manager Jim Leyland didn’t want to take any risks, according to ESPN.com.

River pitched the eighth inning instead so Leyland could make sure the all-time saves leader got into the game.

"If anybody ever messed up Mariano Rivera, I can lay claim to that," said the Detroit Tigers manager."I just couldn't take any chance. You know, I'm probably not the most popular manager in baseball. I wanted to make sure I got out of here alive."

While it would have been nice to get the save, Rivera’s entrance into last night’s game was still one of the most magical moments in baseball history.

Rivera proceeded to pitch a one, two, three inning by exclusively throwing the pitch that has made his career—the cutter.

As the Yankees closer entered from the bullpen, all the players cleared the field. *“Enter Sandman” was blasting through the stadium as Rivera took his place on the mound, standing alone on the baseball field. Fans, reporters, umpires, players, managers and anyone else in attendance gave an extended standing ovation to the greatest closer of all time.

"I think the plan was perfect," said Rivera (who was named All-Star Game MVP) of Leyland’s decision.

Many of the players were glad to be a part of All-Star history.

"It was a great moment. He is one of the best pitchers that's ever played this game," said Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter.

"It was tough. It was special," said Rivera. "Seeing the fans sharing and both teams standing out of the dugout -- managers, coaches, players. Priceless."

He also gave his teammates a short speech before the game started.

"What I said was that I was honored and it was a privilege for me to play with all of them for so many years," the 43-year old recounted.

"First class all the way," said New York Mets third-baseman David Wright. "Well deserving for Mariano. I was on the top step clapping and cheering as loud as I could."

Rivera played a huge part in an American League win. The AL squad won the game 3-0 as their pitching only gave up three hits and struck out eight.
