Free agent wide receiver Greg Jennings has expressed interest in rejoining the Green Bay Packers, where he spent the first seven seasons of his career, though that appears unlikely. The Packers are already paying hefty sums to wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Adding Jennings, with second-year wide receiver Devante Adams around, would be an unnecessary luxury. That is why the Carolina Panthers make much more sense as a potential landing spot for Jennings.

"Two-time Pro Bowl receiver Greg Jennings was in Charlotte on Saturday for a meeting with Panthers officials, according to league sources," Bill Voth of BlackAndBlueReview.com wrote.

"Jennings, who was released by the Vikings earlier this month, has received interest from multiple teams, and he's expected to take time to weigh his options."

It is not known at this time which other teams have contacted the veteran pass catcher.

Jennings, 31, is no longer the dynamic playmaker he was in Green Bay. But he is still a capable option in a passing offense and an upgrade on what Carolina currently has at the position. Outside of rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin, the Panthers didn't get much out of their wide receiving corps last season.

Carolina ranked 19th in receptions (327) and receiving yards (3,828) and 15th in receiving touchdowns (23) last season. The team has repeatedly expressed its confidence in quarterback Cam Newton but has yet to work out an extension with the young signal-caller. Newton is entering the final year of his rookie deal and the Panthers want him to succeed. After releasing Steve Smith last year, Carolina's passing offense lacks a necessary veteran presence, a role which Jennings could fill admirably. Signing Jennings would help Newton's continued development as a franchise quarterback.
