The Carolina Panthers released running back DeAngelo Williams earlier in the offseason, which now leaves them with a bit of a void since injuries at the position have been an issue for them over the past few years. Georgia running back Todd Gurley could fill the need.

According to UGA Football Live, the former Bulldog will visit the Panthers on Thursday to begin his six-trip journey. Carolina has the 25th overall selection in the upcoming draft, which is just about where Gurley is projected to go. He underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in November, which resulted in a drop in his draft stock.

Gurley spoke to reporters after Georgia's Pro Day, during which Panthers scouts were present.

The 20-year-old rushed for 911 yards and nine touchdowns on 123 attempts in only six games last season and was regarded as the best running back in college football. Although his injury is expected to push him further down in the draft, there are a number of teams with a need at the running back position, and one of them happen to be the Panthers.

Carolina's run-heavy attack has resulted in countless injuries to Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker. With Williams now gone and Stewart entering the back nine of his career (on top of health issues over the past three seasons), the addition of Gurley would be a prudent decision and the back would undoubtedly complement quarterback Cam Newton once he recovers from the surgery.

ESPN Insider Todd McShay initially projected Gurley to drop to the Seattle Seahawks at No. 31, but they signed Marshawn Lynch to an extension and then traded out of the first round. Gurley has also been speculated to land with New England at No. 32 as well as Dallas at No. 27, but the Panthers both pick before these clubs.

However, Carolina has a glaring need on the offensive line, which is why both McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. have the team selecting Pittsburgh offensive tackle T.J. Clemmings and Florida offensive tackle D.J. Humphries in their latest mock drafts. The Panthers signed right tackle Michael Oher this offseason, but that won't entirely help their problems. The Panthers ranked 27th in run blocking and 22nd in pass protection last season, according to Football Outsiders, and they'll need better depth since the line had trouble performing when Nate Chandler, Trai Turner and others dealt with injuries.

Gurley visiting the Panthers isn't a big deal, but it's something interesting to keep in mind.
