A truly "incredible edible egg" sold for over $700 on eBay last month due to its rare, round shape.

Kim Broughton, of Essex County, England, was going through her garden on Feb. 17 when she discovered one of her hens laid a "perfectly spherical" egg, the BBC reported. She later auctioned the egg online for a whopping 480 pounds ($738), which she says may not have happened if a friend didn't stop her from eating it.

"I was literally about to crack it open to make a pancake when a mate saw the photo I put on Facebook and messaged me to say 'Don't do it!' " Broughton told the BBC.

Broughton's friend told her someone else sold a similar "one in a billion" egg for 90 pounds.

Amazed by the amount, the 44-year-old decided to auction it on eBay to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in honor of a friend's son who died from the disease, the BBC reported.

"When it was about [20 pounds] I thought 'Who'd pay that for an egg?' and then it went through the roof. It's unbelievable," she said.

Over 60 people ended up placing bids for the egg. Broughton said she hopes the winner, whose identity has not been revealed, will preserve instead of eat the egg.

Broughton also said she will keep an eye on the chicken, a Buff Orpington hen named Ping Pong, in case she lays more round eggs.
