The race for smartphone dominance is never over. As Apple gears up to unveil its latest in the iPhone series, the 5s, complete with a slow motion camera and LED flash, Samsung seems to be getting ready to wow its customers in the fall as well. With the Note 3 smartphone in its final stages of development, many believe a possible unveil date of September 6 will put the phone's launch to consumers sometime in the fall. However, the South Korean tech giant is unlikely to stop with the Note name there.

Both Appe and Samsung have been clawing for the top spots as the best smartphone for consumers, particularly in the U.S. In addition to their behind the scenes competition, the two companies have had a legal tiff over a "rubber banding" patent found ins ome iPhone devices. While that legal battle is ongoing, so too is the smartphone race, with another hurtle to be jumped in the fall when both Apple and Samsung are likely to release their new phones.

As it has done with its hugely successful Galaxy S4 series, Samsong is likely to release a few variations of the Note 3 as well. Forbes suggests at least three variants. Samsung made the practice of introducing device families with the Galaxy S4 a viable and successful marketing option. It launched the original S4 in April and followed it up with three S4 varients in June: the Zoom, the Active and the Mini. Having a family of devices is a great way to bend specifications on hardware for a diverse crop of users while still allowing them all to fly under one flagship banner.

The Note 3 will probably be no exception. Rumors around the Note 3 have been circulating for weeks but recently, Samsung posted information relating to a possible release date on Phonesreview.co.uk.

"Samsung has posted UA Prof Files for models SM-N900T and SM-N900A that are believed to be for the Galaxy Note 3, and these User Agent Profile files are actually specification files that can often describe the model, screen size, and other specs ahead of the device going official," Phonesreview writes.

This, coupled with research by Android Beat is what makes Forbes suggest there will be three variants of the Note 3, it all has to do with the discovery of 4 SM-N900 numbers.

While it's a worthwhile strategy and will likely keep Samsung competing directly with Apple, there is no official word as to whether or not the Note 3 will be joined by other phones under the same name.
