'Supergirl' star Melissa Benoist will receive an assist a couple very familiar with the DC Comics universe that she will inhabit in the new CBS drama.

Dean Cain and Helen Slater have joined the cast of "Supergirl" in unspecified roles, according to TVLine.

Slater originated the on-screen persona of Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl in the panned 1984 movie "Supergirl." Cain played Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman, the cousin of Supergirl, in the '90s TV series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman opposite Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane.

Both actors guest-starred on the WB/CW series "Smallville," which chronicled the life of a teenage Clark Kent before he became the Man of Steel superhero. Slater appeared as Clark's birth mother Lara from his home planet of Krypton, and Cain guest-starred in one episode as the immortal Dr. Curtis Knox.

The casting news come a day after Grey's Anatomy alum Chyler Leigh and "Homeland" vet David Harewood joined the show. Leigh will play Kara's (Benoist) foster sister, Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, and Harewood will play the villainous Hank Henshaw.

"Supergirl" will also star Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olson and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. Laura Benanti will recur as Kara's birth mother Alura Zor-El.

CBS gave "Supergirl" a series commitment last September, and it's likely to get picked up for the 2015-2016 fall TV season. Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler will serve as executive producers.
