Television viewers of an investigative show might have gotten a little more excitement than they were hoping for during one of the program's live telecast when a purple disc-shaped UFO unexpectedly appeared above a city construction site in Lima, Peru.

The unusual occurrence was noticed by the production crew while filming the television show "Alto al Crimen," an investigative program aimed at preventing high level crime, two weeks ago, Peru This Week reported. Instantly, the television crew was made to switch the camera's focus on what appears to be a mysterious object hovering over the upscale Miraflores district of Lima.

On Feb. 10, the show's host, Lima Congressman Renzo Reggiardo, halted an interview in order to allow his camera operator to focus on the mysterious purple object in the sky, UK MailOnline reported.

When the UFO first appears in the video, it can be seen hovering in the sky near a construction site. For the next two hours, witnesses reported seeing the UFO continue to hover. However until now, there has been no official explanation for the astonishing footage.

Following the incident, thousands of people have taken to social media to debate the sighting, with the viral video being watched more than 100,000 times.

While there have been suggestions claiming it to be a drone, a plastic bag, or a hologram projected into the sky, others believe it could be proof of extraterrestrial life.

Adding more mystery to the UFO sighting are claims that the mystery object is somehow linked to an initiative currently underway by the Raelian movement - a UFO religion - to persuade the Peruvian government to build an extraterrestrial embassy, The Examiner reported.

"This UFO appeared right when we held a press conference to present our embassy project plan, which we have submitted to the Peruvian government," Erich Rever of the Peruvian Raelian Movement said.

"Peru must be dear to our extraterrestrial creators, who lived here in ancient times and left many traces, so we're asking the government for permission to build the embassy here," he said.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for Peruvians to understand their past and, more importantly, to consider receiving our creators, the Elohim, who were taken for gods by our ancestors and now ask to be welcomed back."

"We're hoping the Peruvian government will receive their request loud and clear!" he added.

Meanwhile, the Peru chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) has been investigating the sighting by seeking more eyewitnesses who may have videotaped the purple aerial object from different vantage points.
