The new Windows Phone 8 from Nokia which is targeted by photography fans will be revealed on the July 11 event in New York City.
Several rumors have leaked about the smartphone and its 41 megapixel camera sensor for quite some time now. With the definite release date set only a few days from now, this might be the right moment to go over the things expected from the Finnish brand’s new Lumia gadget.
A little background would be appropriate to start with. The mere idea of having a 41 megapixel camera on a smart phone seems like a marketing exploit, after all, the highest resolution for a Digital SLR camera available on the market is only 36 megapixels. The most obvious downside for a smartphone is the missing optical zoom lenses. People who have used the digital zoom functions on camera phones know that they will only have blurry and pixilated photos.
Recently, Samsung has been highly criticized when they announced a resolution to this problem for their Galaxy S4 Zoom. They installed a built-in 10x zoom lens on the S4. This is also a reminder to buyers out there that, it is still more reasonable to get an entry level compact camera than relying on smart phones for high quality pictures.
Nokia’s head of the imaging technology and R&D Eero Salmelin and Juha Alakarhu, decided to go with another approach. The Nokia 808 Pureview launched on 2012, made several heads turn when it had a 41 megapixel imaging sensor even though one was designed for the already obsolete Symbian OS. Not a lot of users needed images which were that huge, so Nokia was keen on marketing pixel oversampling.
To sum up, the 41 megapixel Lumia phone will run in Windows 8, giving the most concrete results to the Nokia-Windows partnership which was announced in 2011. The lens is also rumored to have a more smooth and curvy design than that of 808 Pureview.
