For women, there is regularity in a monthly weight gain attributable to water retention.

While water retention affects both men and women, here are some tips on how to handle those times when even your shoes feel tight.

Another method for handling water retention is cutting out fatty foods, as high levels of sodium in meals are responsible for excess fluid retention. However, sodium is present in almost every processed meal as well as some natural foods you eat. It is also important to reduce your sodium intake to a maximum of 1,000 milligrams per day, which is possible by inspecting labels on food and avoiding processed products, as well as avoiding salt.

You can also use calcium supplements with your meals to reduce risks of fluid retention, with the recommended minimum being 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day, according to Science 2.0.

MotherNature.com suggests that you eat healthful, small portions of food frequently and avoid junk food as much as possible, as consuming too much sodium can clog up your tissues. Another recommendation is to drink water frequently, as it helps flush excess fluids out of your body.

Being active is also helpful since walking, bicycling, tennis and other activities can help pump out water and other fluids that might stay your legs and ankles. Studies also suggests adding a slice of lemon once in a while.

It is also recommended that you elevate your legs for a few minutes each day when your calves are swollen. If you keep experiencing symptoms for more than a week, especially in the lower extremities and around the abdomen, then you should go to your doctor.
