An argument during an amateur soccer game in Brazil ended with two people dead; a player who argued a call was stabbed to death by the referee, the referee was decapitated and his head was placed on a stick in the middle of the field, according to Deadspin.

The incident happened Sunday, June 30 in the Brazilian city of Pius XII located in the state of Maranhao in the northeast corner of the country. The whole thing started when Josenir dos Santos Abreu, 30, complained to the referee, Octavio Jordan Silva, 20, about being kicked on the field. During the heated argument Abreu struck Silva, according to Esportes R7.

Silva responded to being punched by taking out a knife that he was carrying and stabbing Abreu in the chest. Abreu would end up succumbing to his wounds en route to the hospital, according to Deadspin.

Friends and family of Abreu stormed the field in outrage to seek revenge on Silva. The 20-year-old was then tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. The carnage ended when Silva was decapitated and his head was placed on a stake in the middle of the soccer pitch, according to Deadspin.

Valter Costa, the regional delegate (essentially a district attorney) of St. Agnes, told Esportes R7 that police were using videos recorded by witnesses on their cell phones in an attempt to identify those responsible.

"Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact," Costa said. "We will identify and hold accountable everyone involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do no collaborate with the legality of a state law."

So far police have been able to identify and arrest one of the men responsible for the attack, Luis Moraes Souza, 27. Souza claims that he participated in the assault on Silva but that he was not the one who killed him. Police are still looking for two other suspects, according to Deadspin.
