A new survey from Pew Research Center revealed that Reddit is used by 6 percent of the adult internet users in America.

Reddit, a bulletin board of user-submitted text, links, photos and videos, is used among 6 percent of the online adult users in the United States, according to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. This is the first survey of the kind to examine reddit as a standalone platform. The online community, which gives users a common platform to submit content and vote up or down based on interest, is scraping its way to the list of popular social networking sites. Although fetching a place where Facebook stands today with 67 percent of online users, is a long shot, it can be compared with Tumblr, a trendy micro blogging platform.

According to the Pew Research Center, reddit is more popular among young internet users than those above 50 years old. About 15 percent of male internet users aged between 18 and 29 years old visit the site, compared to 5 percent women of the same age group.

The overall usage of the self-proclaimed "front page of the Internet," is more among men of all age groups above 18 than women. The report also noted that urban and suburban residents are more frequent users than those in rural areas with only 2 percent reportedly using the site.

Reddit announced 70,017,371 unique visitors last month from 183 different countries, quite an impressive benchmark for the company completing eight years. The site features news around the globe, and the most popular and voted news appears on the top of the page with the least favorite brought down to the bottom. Reddit gained worldwide attention with its popular "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) session, which gives users an opportunity to ask anything to the "I am a.....ask me anything" Host.

The site also suffered several crashes due to heavy traffic last August when President Barack Obama hosted his own 40 minute AMA session, according to a report from PC Mag, last year.

Following the trend, reddit is bound to make its mark among the leading social networking sites including Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram, which accounts for 15 percent of the online users, very soon.
