Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's split in March 2014 was a surprise to many, expect for the couple themselves.

In an interview with Marie Claire Australia for the March issue, the 42-year-old actress admitted that she and Martin actually separated in 2013 - one year before announcing the split on Goop, Paltrow's lifestyle website.

The "Iron Man" actress revealed that she had "a year of quiet separation" from the Coldplay frontman while filming "Mortdecai" in 2012 and added that she turned to her "Mortdecai" co-star Johnny Depp for break-up advice.

At the time, Deep and longtime love Vanessa Paradis had ended their 14 years relationship. The two are parents to 15-year-old daughter Lily-Rose and 12-year-old son Jack

"Nobody knew what Chris and I had been going through, so I didn't say 'Hey, this is what's happening,'" Paltrow said about the breakup, via The Daily Mail. "But I did ask him mostly children-centric questions, like 'How is it on them? How did you do it?'"

The Oscar-winning actress added of their split, "It's very sad. You have an expectation of your life, and it's sad to change that expectation."

The former couple, who are parents to two kids Apple and Moses, have remained amicable exes.

"We've worked really f--king hard to get to [this] point," Paltrow said. "But we're very, very close, and it's so nice. I feel like it's, in a way, the relationship we were meant to have."

Martin is currently dating Jennifer Lawrence, while Paltrow has been linked to "Glee" co-creator Brad Falchuk.
