The Nokia 105 brings you back to 2005. It won’t let you watch your favorite show on Netflix. It won’t let you snap a photo and share it on Instagram. It won’t allow you to open Google Play and download the latest video-sharing app. What the Nokia 105 will do is give you the bare essentials in a cellphone for $20. What it gives Nokia is a way to make a great profit, according to CNN Money.

The Nokia 105 allows users to text message, make calls and gives the consumer a nice color screen. It has no camera.

Although the phone is low-end, it has proved to be good business for Nokia. For each 105 sold, the company makes $5.80— this is a 30 percent margin based up information from the IHS. The Finland-based company spends $14.20 on manufacturing and the materials for each phone.

This is not the first time Nokia has sold a phone with these features. It made a similar phone five years ago with the Nokia 1110. However, in 2005, the 1110 cost triple the amount.

ISH analyst Wayne Lam explained why Nokia is able to make money off the 105: "By keeping features the same for nearly a decade, the Nokia 105 can integrate nearly all system functions into a single chip, dramatically reducing the cost to produce a cellphone."

Compared to the profit margin for Apple and iPhone 5, Nokia and the 105 do not create a powerhouse. Apple has a profit margin of 68 percent for the iPhone 5 compared to Nokia’s 30 percent with the 105. However, Apple’s phone cost 30 times more than the low-cost phone from Nokia.

The 105 provides 12.5 hours of call time and a stand-by time that lasts as long as 35 hours. This type of cellphone attracts customers in areas such as Latin America, India and Africa. These markets may contain sub-par power grids which lead to many blackouts.

These emerging markets are good for Nokia—especially since in 2012, 90 percent of the company’s shipments were of low-cost phones. "While much attention has been lavished on smartphones, the market for simple handsets remains very important to Nokia," mentioned Lam.

The Nokia 105 has additional features which include an FM radio, five games and an SMS service which gives helpful tips on parenting, dieting and movie times. It also gives local news. Nokia calls this service Nokia Life, which—as the company puts it—is “like having the internet at your fingertips.”
