First-time mother, 11-year-old Djasinga, gave birth to a baby Bornean Orangutan at Germany's Zoo Berlin this month, but did not bond with her newborn, so the little one is being raised by zoo keepers, according to ZooBorns.

The infant, named Rieke, is healthy and thriving, according to zookeepers. The zoo will consult with the European Endangered Species Programme to decide what will happen next to the newborn orangutan.

According to The Weather Channel, female orangutans are ready to bear children after the age of 10. They typically only have one baby and are not ready to give birth again for another five years.

Native to the island of Borneo, Bornean Orangutans dwell in rainforests, but just like their cousins the Sumatran Orangutans, they are near extinction. Rainforests are being taken over by palm tree plantations and the orangutans are losing their habitat, according to ZooBorns.

ZooBorns recommends that consumers only buy products with sustainable palm oil to help the orangutans keep their habitat.
