Former head coach Wade Phillips is meeting with the Denver Broncos today about their open defensive coordinator position, Ed Werder of ESPN.com reports. Phillips coached the team during the early years of John Elway and Gary Kubiak's playing days.

However, the Broncos still appear to have their sights set on Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph. Alex Marvez of Fox Sports notes that Phillips could get the job for the 2015 season before transitioning to a senior assistant position in 2016 when Joseph's contract with the Bengals is up.

Phillips was most recently the defensive coordinator and interim head coach for the Houston Texans from 2011-2013. During that time, Houston's defense never ranked lower than seventh in yards allowed per game.

The Broncos boast a considerable amount of talent on the defensive side of the ball. DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, Von Miller & others helped propel them to a No. 3 overall ranking this past year. Phillips would not have to go through a rebuilding project were he tapped as the team's next DC. Of course, much of the team's future relies on whether or not Peyton Manning decides to return in 2015.
