A drug-delivering drone failed to reach its destination Tuesday night when it crashed in a Mexican city near the U.S. border.

The drone carrying 6.6 pounds of methamphetamine apparently couldn't handle the load and crashed in a supermarket parking lot near Mexico's San Ysidro border crossing into California, the Associated Press reported.

Tijuana police received a call alerting them to the fallen drone and recovered 6 packets of meth from the scene, police spokesman Jorge Morrua said. The bags were taped to the exterior of the drone, which police said was a type that could be programmed to fly to a specific coordinate without a guiding pilot, the BBC reported.

Investigators are now tracing where the drone originated and who sent it.

This isn't the first time drones have been used for covert drug operations, Tijuana police said. In April, police found a drone used to smuggle pot, cellphones and tobacco inside a South Carolina prison, the AP reported.

Drug cartels have even hired engineers to manufacture their own drones designed to carry more weight than ones legally sold on the market, according to the BBC.
