When Sid Meier makes a strategy game, it's generally a success.

The strategy game designer is known for his work on "Civilization," "Pirates," "Railroad Tycoon" and more. His most recent game was "Civilization: Beyond Earth," a game where players take their earthly civilization into space to build a system of space colonies.

While space is the Final Frontier, that doesn't mean that Meier is done with his space-building. Meier's game company Firaxis announced its new game on Monday, Sid Meier's "Starships."

The game is a turn-based strategy game set in the "Beyond Earth" Universe. In the game, players have control of a fleet of starships, which they must use to travel through the galaxy, protect planets and build a federation. As players move forward, they'll gather technology, customize their ships and expand their space.

The game is supposed to have "dynamically generated tactical combat," which will make each fight unique and the game replayable.

Meier said in the press release that "Starships" was inspired by what would be the next stage of civilization building after "Beyond Earth."

"When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth......What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?"

If a player has both "Starships" and "Beyond Earth" on their computer, Meier said the two games will be able to interact, though he never revealed what that would imply.

Firaxis and its distributor, 2K Entertainment, hope to release the game by early 2015 onto PCs, Macs and the iPad. Meier did not mention anything about an Android version of "Starships."
