Two-thousand fourteen was a solid year for gaming. The year started out with innovative AAA games like "Watch Dogs" and "Rayman Legends," and it finished out with games likes "Super Smash Bros" and "Destiny." However, which games did the best in 2014? Unsurprisingly, Activision's latest edition to the "Call of Duty" franchise did.

Activision released a press release on Friday, revealing that Activision's "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" was the #1 console game in the U.S. and globally in 2014. This is also the sixth time that a game in the "Call of Duty" franchise was #1 in the U.S. This isn't surprising, considering that "Advanced Warfare" received mostly positive reviews from critics and customers alike, as well as a lot of hype from the press thanks to the new exosuit mechanics and Kevin Spacey's front-and-center presence in the game.

While the sales numbers was clearly a big success for the first-person shooter series, "Advanced Warfare" made less money than "Call of Duty:Ghosts."

This data is further correlated by the game's control of the market during the busiest time of the year; December. According to Forbes, "Call of Duty" beat out a number of key console games in December, including "Grand Theft Auto V" (#2), "Super Smash Bros" (#4) and "Minecraft" (#6).

According to the NPD, the top-selling games of December 2014 are:

  1. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, PC)
  2. Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3)

  3. Madden NFL 15 (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)

  4. Super Smash Bros. (Wii U, 3DS)

  5. NBA 2K15 (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, PC)

  6. Minecraft (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4)

  7. Far Cry 4 (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

  10. FIFA 15 (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Wii, 3DS, Vita)

It should be noted that this data only accounts for retail-based console games. Any game bought either for a PC or via an online gaming platform would not be included in this data.
