It was a party to celebrate John Legend's 36th birthday. The star-studded event was held on Jan. 8 at Catch Roof in New York City - and Kanye West gave a toast to the singer, dubbing him as the "next Stevie Wonder."

West gave a toast in front of a room full of A-list stars which consisted of his wife, Kim Kardashian, Legend's wife, Chrissy Teigen, as well as Robert DeNiro, Katie Couric, Estelle and Michael Strahan, reported Page Six.

"A gentleman, a very well-mannered human being right here," West said to Legend. The singer was also celebrating the 10th anniversary of his debut album, "Get Lifted."

"I'm trying to get some pointers from him," the rapper added. "I don't want to be the Phil Spector of hip-hip or anything."

Legend later took the microphone to thank West for his toast.

"People were skeptical about us, they didn't know if we had what it takes to be successful," the singer said. "Kanye would take me to these meetings and jump on the table and tell people I was the next Stevie Wonder."

Before heading to Catch Roof, Legend and his guests had a three-course dinner at the restaurant, located in the Meatpacking District in New York.

Q-Tip, who DJ'd the party, "gave John a big birthday shout out," a party goer said. "Chrissy also gave a speech about how proud she is of John and how much she loves him. She also thanked everyone for coming," the source told People

Legend turned 36 on Dec. 28, and his wife celebrated by Instagramming a photo and captioning it: "Happy Birthday to my best friend in the whole wide world, I love you schmoopy no you schmoopy no you schmoopy."
