Water and sports drinks may not actually be the most hydrating beverage choices to drink after a workout, according to a small new study.

Milk, as well as milk alternatives, help the body retain the most liquid due to their natural balance of sodium, carbohydrate and protein, according to the study.

The researchers had 15 men work out by cycling on four different occasions. After each workout the men rehydrated with four different drinks - cow's milk, soy milk, a milk-based meal supplement or Powerade.

The study participant's blood and urine were tested after the drinks to determine the hydration and nutrients values received by the men.

The milk-based meal supplement had the best results, but the study found that all of the milk products hydrated the men significantly better than the Powerade.

The Powerade drink did have one edge in the study. It was reportedly the most enjoyable to drink post-workout by the men and made them feel much less bloated or full.

The study authors also noted that drinking water after exercise could leave you more dehydrated because it doesn't replenish dropped sodium levels.
