Rescue searchers found a missing U.S. man dead in the mountains in central Mexico Friday.

ABC News reported that a search and rescue team found the body of Hari Simran Singh Khalsa, 25, in one of the narrow gorges or ravines that crisscross the mountains in Tepoztlan.

Khalsa had been missing for four days before they found his body, which was not far from where he snapped a picture of himself with his cellphone.

The civil defense coordinator for Morelos state, Carlos Mandujano, said they do not know the cause of death, but the autopsy will reveal it.

However, Khalsa's family and friends believe he died from a fall while hiking after sustaining a fatal injury to his head.

Fox Los Angeles said the search began Tuesday when Khalsa did not return from a hike in Tepoztlan, approximately an hour south of Mexico City.

He wore only a T-shirt and shorts, and had little food and water, according to his wife, Ad Purkh Kaur.

Kaur said her husband instructed yoga, and they arrived in Tepoztlan for a yoga retreat Dec. 26.

Kaur said her husband had been an experienced hiker, who was just getting back into back-country hiking. She did not think he had much survival training.
