Outgoing Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid broke bones in his face and several ribs when a piece of exercise equipment snapped at his Nevada home Thursday, causing him to fall, NBC News reported.

The 75-year-old senator was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas where he received treatment for his injuries and is expected to return to Washington this weekend, Reid's office said in a statement released Friday. Reid will be in his office on Tuesday as the 114th Congress prepares to convene.

"Senator Reid was first brought to St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson by his security detail. He was then transferred to UMC for further testing, where he was admitted overnight as a precaution," the senator's office said in a press release Friday.

An elastic exercise band broke and struck Reid in the face, causing him to fall, according to his spokesman Adam Jentleson. As Reid fell, his face hit some equipment, resulting in multiple broken bones near his right eye.

When Reid hit the floor, he broke several ribs, Jentleson said, adding that no internal bleeding was found and Reid's vision should not be affected.

"Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene. His doctors expect a full recovery," Reid's office said.

In 2011, Reid, a marathon runner and former boxer, dislocated a shoulder and injured his face after he leaned against a parked car, slipped and fell after a morning run in the rain, Fox News reported. Reid injured his rib and hip in October 2012 in a car crash.
