A Flagstaff, Ariz. police officer died Saturday after being shot by a domestic violence suspect.

CBS News reported 24-year-old rookie police officer, Tyler Jacob Stewart, had answered a domestic violence call around 1 p.m. when the shooting occurred.

Flagstaff Police Sgt. Margaret Bentzen said Stewart had been shot several times and then the suspect shot himself.

Stewart was transferred to Flagstaff Medical Center where he died.

He had been with the department for less than a year.

Bentzen said the suspect was Robert W. Smith, 28, of Prescott. According to CNN, Stewart had attempted to make contact with Smith when the shooting happened.

CNN said no other details about the shooting had been released.

“This is an enormous tragedy for our department and the family of our officer,” CBS News reported as Flagstaff police chief Kevin Treadway as saying in a statement.

“We are a close-knit organization, and know that all members of the Flagstaff Police Department are grieving at this time.”

According to CNN, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website reported that Stewart is one of 125 police officer who died while on duty in 2014.

“It is heartbreaking to lose one of our officers,” Flagstaff Mayor Jerry Nabours said. “We collectively mourn for his family and the entire department.”
