A Utah hunter was accidentally killed by his friend's 12-gauge shotgun Tuesday while trying to shoot at pheasants.

Norman E. Newbold, 57, was hunting with three friends at a local hunting club just before one of the men slipped in some mud and fell into a creek, accidentally firing his 12-gauge shotgun at Newbold.

When Newbold collapsed, his friends called 911 and tried to help him using first aid. An ambulance arrived and took Newbold to Logan Regional Hospital, where he died around 3 p.m., Salt Lake Tribune reported.

"All of the evidence in this incident is indicating this was a tragic accident," Cache County sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson wrote in a news release. "Further investigation will continue with assistance from the state medical examiner's office; however, no criminal charges are being considered at this time."

Another man was killed at the same hunting club earlier this year, according to Cache Valley Daily. A 60-year-old hunting guide was accidentally shot and transported to the hospital, although his injuries were not life-threatening.
