"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood is mourning the sudden loss of her father, Shawn Portwood Sr.

According to the Daily Mail, her father passed away Tuesday night at a Florida hospital after being placed in a medically-induced coma. He was 50 years old.

Amber's brother, Shawn Jr., told Radar Online that their father was placed in a coma on Dec. 11 after having surgery on his liver. Reportedly, he was waiting for a liver transplant.

"His liver isn't functioning correctly, and he does need a transplant. He has been in an induced coma since Thursday so he can heal from surgery," he said before his father died.

"When my father found out he had a liver condition 11 years ago, he quit drinking and turned his life around," he added. "Amber and I are very close to him."

Shortly after her father entered the hospital, the MTV star asked her Twitter followers for prayers.

"Everyone please pray for my father he's in the ICU... I appreciate it and sending love always," she wrote.

Shawn Jr. told the Daily Mail that Amber and her boyfriend Matthew Baier drove from Indiana to Florida to be by their father's side but she was forced to return home after she came down with strep throat. Amber and her daughter, Leah, are said to be heading back down to Florida to attend her father's funeral.

"My dad was the most important person in Amber's and my life. He was a very strong-willed person and even though he was battling illness for a very long time, he never gave up," Shawn Jr. told the Daily Mail. "He didn't give up on life. He didn't give up on his family. He didn't want to give up. I like to think that he was able to see my son, Eli, for the last time before he died. He lived through pain for many years but it didn't prevent him from sticking it through all the way to the end."
