United Airlines announced Wednesday that 23,000 of its flight attendants will be receiving an iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple's most recent iPhone will be distributed among attendants in the second half of 2015 to help them better handle onboard retail transactions and access their company email, according to ValueWalk.

The 5.5-inch device will provide attendants with information regarding safety and service.

The announcement follows three years after United started giving iPads to its pilots in the cockpit, ValueWalk reported. The plan was renewed earlier this year, with pilots set to receive the iPad Air 2.

United is the latest airline to start giving its flight attendants smartphones, with Delta giving its attendants Nokia phones last year.

The airline said attendants will also be able to use the iPhone 6 Plus to access policies and procedure manuals, Mac Rumors reported.

"We are thrilled to make this investment in our flight attendants," said Sam Risoli, senior vice president of inflight services at United Airlines. "iPhone 6 Plus will enable them to deliver an even higher level of flyer-friendly service and will offer our flight attendants simple, one-touch access to valuable work information, enabling them to better serve our customers."

United plans on expanding the iPhone 6 Plus program in the future, replacing printed safety manuals with electronic versions so flight attendants will be able to issue reports in real-time and access aircraft cabin issue and repairs. Another goal is for the iPhones to feature tools designed for helping customers.
