A family's cat disappeared in Virginia and showed up 36 days later in Hawaii.

Ashley Barth was packing her family's belongings in September in preparation for a move to Hawaii when her cat, Mee Moowe, disappeared, according to ABC affiliate WJLA. The family spent three nights searching for their beloved cat.

"It made me sick. It was heartbreaking," Barth said. "My girls were devastated trying to tell me that I couldn't leave without Mee Moowe."

The moving boxes arrived in the Barth's new home in Hawaii 36 days later and a faint "meow" was heard from one of the boxes.

"The guy goes, 'what was that sound?' and my heart just kind of sunk for a minute and I thought, 'no, no way,'" Barth said. "And then we heard it again. And the guy said, 'was that a cat?'"

Mee Moowe had lost half of her body weight and could barely walk, but she went right up to her family and wouldn't leave their sides, Barth said.

Living without food or water for more than a month and surviving is very unlikely for a cat, but Mee Moowe made it. "I have no idea how she did it," Barth said.

Mee Moowe was reunited with her family, but will have to live the next three months apart from them. The travelling cat did not get her vaccinations before her adventure, so she'll have to stay in quarantine in Hawaii before being allowed in her new home.
