The Secret Service arrested a man near the White House on Wednesday after they found a rifle and ammunition in his car, ABC News reported.

R.J. Kapheim, of Davenport, Iowa, was near the White House on the corner of 15th Street and E Street at around 1 p.m. when he approached a Secret Service checkpoint officer and "stated that someone in Iowa told him to go to the White House," Secret Service spokeswoman Nicole Mainor told the station.

Thinking the 41-year-old was acting suspicious, agents searched his Iowa license-plated vehicle, a Volkswagen, and found a 30-30 rifle and about 40 rounds of ammunition. Authorities also found a 6-inch blade inside the car.

Kapheim was the one who led the agents to his car, CBS DC reported.

He was arrested and charged with possession of an unregistered firearm. More charges are pending, Mainor told ABC News.

Wednesday's arrest is the latest in a string of incidents relating to security lapses to hit the Secret Service, most notably an intruder who jumped the White House fence in September and made it all the way inside the mansion before he was arrested.

Reports last week revealed over three dozen people illegally entered the secured area surrounding the White House between fiscal years 2009 and 2014, a number much higher than reported by former Secret Service Director Julia Pierson, who resigned in late September.
