The New York Jets are 2-8 in what has become a laughably disastrous season. As a result, coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik are likely to lose their jobs after the season.

One question that remains is what the team will do with 2013 second-round pick Geno Smith. One possible answer: axe him.

"The Jets gave the Geno Smith experiment the old college try but it looks to be just about over," Seth Walder of the New York Daily News wrote. "Even John Idzik would have to realize that the team needs to move on at the position, so expect the next hope at franchise quarterback to be on the roster next season either way. Another GM would not have a shred of loyalty to Smith, so the slim chance of him playing next year would be even slimmer should Idzik get canned."

Smith has thrown just 18 touchdowns against 31 interceptions in his two seasons as the Jets starter. He was completing just 56.2 percent of his passes before being mercifully benched in favor of Michael Vick.

If the season ended tomorrow, the Jets would have the third overall pick in the draft. The top five is an excellent place to look when searching for a new franchise quarterback. CBS Sports' Rob Rang has New York selecting Florida State quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.

"Unless the Jets suddenly turn things around, Rex Ryan will be coaching elsewhere in 2015 and that may just be the start of the changes," Rang wrote. "Current general manager John Idzik is not the kind of risk-taker to gamble on Famous Jameis' propensity for off-field trouble but his potential replacement could be more adventurous. Regardless of what you think about Winston's character, it is hard to deny his talent. In terms of size, arm, mobility and instincts, he's the top quarterback prospect in the country."
