The parents of Michael Brown, the black teen who was shot dead by a Missouri officer, headed back to the site where their son was killed and distributed about 70 turkeys to the families in the community, according to USA Today.

Michael Brown Sr. and his wife Cal joined a church group and personally bought some turkeys with their own money, but also handed out turkeys from their church and Johnson's foundation, USA Today reported.

The St. Louis area of Ferguson is awaiting the decision of the grand jury in the shooting death of Brown by 28-year-old officer Darren Wilson, according to USA Today.

Brown's and his wife spent this past Saturday morning handing out free turkeys in the apartment complex where he was killed, USA Today reported.

The couple said they wanted to volunteer and donate as a way of giving back to the community that supported them after their son's death, according to USA Today.

"This will be our first Thanksgiving without our son. The family just had to roll up our sleeves and help the community. We thought this was the most best for us, to just help back out. We love the support, came to give back," said Brown, quoted by USA Today.

The grand jury has been convened since Aug. 20, and the grand jury is still deliberating, according to USA Today.

"This is just the beginning," said Cal Brown, USA Today reported. "We have a lot more community initiatives that we plan on doing."

Cal Brown added that this Thanksgiving will be the first one without her son and that it will be "tough, but that her family will have to push forward for their remaining children," according to USA Today.

"We will miss him - his wittiness, his pranks, him with his big plate of food sitting there like a king," said Cal Brown, USA Today reported.
