Mel Gibson would direct Robert Downey Jr. in Marvel’s “Iron Man 4” if the studio approached him with the project.

Gibson’s name first became attached to the “Iron Man” franchise after Downey Jr. said he would do another film if the “Passion of The Christ” director signed on.

Gibson told Extra’s Mario Lopez he would definitely direct the “Iron Man” film if given the opportunity.

"I'm pretty good at directing,” Gibson said. “I think I got some statues for it. I think I can do it. I think I'm a better director than actor. I hope somebody gives me an argument on that."

Unfortunately, Downey Jr. has been sending mixed signals when it comes to whether Marvel is planning a fourth “Iron Man” film. The actor made an appearance on “The Late Show” with David Letterman, and told the show host there won’t be an “Iron Man 4.”

"There [are] no plans for an Iron Man 4," he said. "That's a valid question. Like it hasn't made enough money? Yeah, I guess they have too much money or something. There is no script for Iron Man 4. They do have a plan and I think they're going to announce it [soon]."

Letterman kept insisting Downey Jr. give fans a definitive answer about the franchise, which the actor eventually caved into giving up a “no.”

"Just between us, no," he told the late-night host. "But, I'm going to do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still going to be involved with Marvel and there's going to be plenty of fun stuff to happen."

However, fans will be able to catch Tony Stark in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015 and “Captain America 3” in 2016.
