Monday night, on primetime TV, co-founder of The Weather Channel John Coleman said global warming is a myth.

The Weather Channel is very publicly distancing itself from Coleman and his anti-climate change views, according to CNN Money.

David Kenny, the current CEO of The Weather Company, appeared on CNN's "Reliable Sources" to challenge Coleman's opinions expressed on Fox News and in an open letter he penned in October.

"We're grateful that he got us started 32 years ago. But he hasn't been with us in 31 years. So he's not really speaking for The Weather Channel in any way today," Kenny said.

"I think we can all be proud of our resumes, but I would prefer people use the credentials they have today, not the credentials of three decades ago," he added.

The Weather Channel reiterated its previous statement about global warming on its website in light of Coleman's comments.

"The climate of the earth is indeed warming, with an increase of approximately 1 [to] 1-1/2 degrees Fahrenheit in the past century, more than half of that occurring since the 1970s. The warming has taken place as averaged globally and annually; significant regional and seasonal variations exist," the statement says.

"Impacts can already be seen, especially in the Arctic, with melting glaciers, thawing permafrost, and rapid retreat and thinning of sea ice, all of which are affecting human populations as well as animals and vegetation," the statement continues. "There and elsewhere, rising sea level is increasing coastal vulnerability."

Kenny's main worry is not necessarily Coleman or what he said, according to CNN Money. Kenny is concerned about The Weather Channel viewers and that they continue "to believe that we present to them a great understanding of the Earth and how it works based on science."

"I'm concerned whenever the discussion of climate change veers from the science," he said, according to CNN Money. "The science is really clear. And I don't like our brand being associated with something that's not scientifically based."
