Showtime's original series "Nurse Jackie" was renewed for a sixth season.

"Nurse Jackie" is the story of mother and wife Jackie Peyton, played by Edie Falco, as she navigates through the world of medicine as a registered nurse in the emergency room of a New York City hospital.

"Nurse Jackie Peyton is determined to be all things to all people," reads her character description. "As an ER nurse she navigates the rough waters of a crumbling healthcare system, doing everything she can to provide her patients with the best care possible... But Jackie's equilibrium is askew now that she is off her daily diet of prescription pain medication."

It then asks, "Is long-term sobriety a real possibility for a woman with as many balls in the air and axes to grind as Nurse Jackie?"

The show has seen great success over the past four seasons, but has become especially popular as viewers anticipate what will happen to Jackie at the close of season five.

According to USA Today, last Sunday's broadcast of "Nurse Jackie" brought in 784,000 viewers, and averages about 3.1 million viewers from week to week across a number of different platforms.

"Under the new leadership of [executive producer] Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, the show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever," said David Nevins, Showtime entertainment president.

"Nurse Jackie is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series' growth in its fifth season," he added.

Clyde Phllips replaced the show's creators, Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius, and will be working alongside the show's remaining executive producers Caryn Mandabach, Richie Jackson, and Tom Straw.

Clyde Phillips is a recognized writer and producer in television as well as film and has seen his most recent success writing for the hit series "Dexter".
