The fashion industry has lost legendary designer Oscar De La Renta.

The 82-year-old fashion designer died at age 82 on Oct. 20, according to ABC News. He had dressed nearly every major celebrity over the past 50 years.

He first rose to fame in the 1960s, dressing Jackie Kennedy. He went on to dress red carpet staples including Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Jessica Chastain. He most recently designed the wedding dress for Amal Clooney, which she wore when she married George Clooney in Venice last month.

De la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic. He studied painting in Spain where he became interested in fashion. He served as an apprentice for Cristóbal Balenciaga in Spain and then moved on to Paris to work as a couture assistant for Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin.

He married his first wife Françoise de Langlade, the former editor-in-chief of French Vogue, until her death in 1983. He then remarried in 1989 to Annette Engelhard. He has several step children from both marriages and an adopted son Moises de la Renta.

His son-in-law Alex Bolen is the CEO of Oscar de la Renta, LLC and his step-daughter Eliza Bolen is the Vice President of Licensing.
