Everybody loves seeing records broken and history made. Even on a small scale, such as the Associated Press' college football poll, people like to see new ground broken.

The Southeastern Conference has made such history as the first league to place four teams in the top five. All four schools are from the western division.

Mississippi State remained at the top spot after a weekend off. Florida State barely held onto its No. 2 ranking following a nail-biting 31-27 victory over then-No. 5 Notre Dame.

"You can say whatever you want: This team is dominant,'' FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said after the game. "This team understands how to win. ... This team has tremendous what I call 'adversity tolerance.' It doesn't flinch. It can deal with anything.''

Ole Miss keeps its No. 3 ranking while Alabama moves up three spots to No. 4 after a 59-0 beat down of Texas A&M. Auburn took advantage of losses by the previously unbeaten Fighting Irish and Baylor Bears to scuttle ahead one spot to No. 5 during a bye week.

Notre Dame fell two spots to No. 7, and Baylor fell to No. 12 after their upset loss to West Virginia 41-27.

The SEC has been one of the most dominant conferences in college football over the last handful of years. Since 2009, the SEC has placed three teams in the top five of the AP Top 25 16 times. Since 2001, there have only been 30 such occurrences.

Only three top five teams remain undefeated. The No. 1 Bulldogs (6-0, 3-0 SEC), No. 2 Seminoles (7-0, 4-0 ACC) and No. 3 Rebels (7-0, 4-0 SEC). Ole Miss and Mississippi State will play each other in the last game of the regular season. There are no ties in college football, so one school is guaranteed to end the season with a loss.
