Apple has taken the desktop market to a whole new level with its upgraded 27-inch iMac with Retina display, featuring the world's highest resolution.

Apple, unveiled an all-new 27 inch iMac with Retina 5K display  with the world's "highest resolution"at the much-hyped  "special event" Thursday.  According to the company's official press release, the 5K display boasts 14.7 million pixels or features a 5120 x 2880 resolution, which is seven times more pixels than in a standard Full HD TV and is 67 percent more than 4K.

The launch of the new iMac comes after much  speculations  around the launch event. The update to the iMac lineup is extremely important as it marks the first major one since 2011. In addition to the boosted resolution for the new iMac, Apple says the new screen uses 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. This is made possible by using high efficiency LEDs. The tech giant also included some new tech such as a custom timing controller and a specially designed oxide-based TFT.

"Thirty years after the first Mac changed the world, the new iMac with Retina 5K display running OS X Yosemite is the most insanely great Mac we have ever made," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said in a press statement, Thursday. "With a breathtaking 14.7 million pixel display, faster CPU and graphics, Fusion Drive, and Thunderbolt 2, it's the most beautiful and powerful iMac ever."

Apple's iMac with Retina 5K sports high-end features to compliment its all-in-one desktop lineup. Powered by a 3.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost speed of  up to 3.9 GHz, the configuration can be upped to 4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.4 GHz, according to Apple. The iMac features AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics, 8GB RAM and 1TB Fusion Drive storage, which can further be configured with Radeon R9 M295X, 32GB of memory and 3TB of Fusion Drive storage. It has two Thunderbolt ports, each with 20Gbps transfer speed.
